The “problem” with Land is that he doesn’t operate the same way other right-wing thinkers do. That is, his “imagined future” isn’t a goal or even a critique, it’s a prophecy. His opinions stem from his vision of what he sees in the future, but these are ultimately subservient to it. People focus too much on him being a “bad guy” without understanding where that negative energy comes from.
it's kinda wild when you think about it - all that scientific knowledge built into the machine's design isn't something the factory worker necessarily understands or controls. they just have to follow along with its pre-programmed motions like they're dancing with a really bossy robot partner. marx saw this as pretty alienating - the worker becomes almost like an appendage of the machine rather than the other way around. pretty relevant today too when you think about amazon warehouse workers following computer-optimized paths or gig workers controlled by algorithms.
