The whole book was a great example of his absurdist brand of black humor. For me his defining characteristic is that he is trying to find meaning in existence but is often unable to turn up anything so he just says fuck it and draws a picture of an asshole.

It was revelatory to me in its uniqueness of vision and style. It was both profane and humane. And Vonnegut's ability to point out the common absurdity we take for granted touched my teenaged soul.

As best as I can try to explain, BOC is a fine, self-referential example of post-modern satire. A lot of Vonnegut's stuff is just a straight-shot plot, but Breakfast does something a little different. In post-modern lit, the idea is to call the reader's attention to the fact that they are reading a book written by someone else. Think of it like the opposite of escapist fiction. Have you ever lost yourself in a book's plot? Yeah, postmodernism doesn't do that. The point is to keep you aware and keep you THINKING. The fact that you're questioning what the hell is going on and why there seems to be no discernible line between reality and narrative and author and character is, in a weird, po-mo fucked up kind of way, kind of the point.
