As best as I can try to explain, BOC is a fine, self-referential example of post-modern satire. A lot of Vonnegut's stuff is just a straight-shot plot, but Breakfast does something a little different. In post-modern lit, the idea is to call the reader's attention to the fact that they are reading a book written by someone else. Think of it like the opposite of escapist fiction. Have you ever lost yourself in a book's plot? Yeah, postmodernism doesn't do that. The point is to keep you aware and keep you THINKING. The fact that you're questioning what the hell is going on and why there seems to be no discernible line between reality and narrative and author and character is, in a weird, po-mo fucked up kind of way, kind of the point.
